This is a bit of a weird one. Where to begin…

The chorus of Father Charles goes, “Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles’ Father.” This is taken directly from an acronym used in music to help remember the Circle of Fifths (a beautiful chart that illustrates Western music theory). B, E, A, D, G, C, F is the order that flats are added as you go through the keys in the Circle of Fifths. This is also reversible – in which case, the phrase becomes “Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle.” A neat trick.

Going with this military imagery, I wrote verses describing a military conflict of some sort – a losing battle – and the only person who could save the day was a commander named Charles (or maybe his father?).

But there’s also a duality of meaning in the verses, in that they describe my feelings of being a musician in an age where it’s all been said and done, and where ubiquitous music and general apathy make it difficult to get people to care about one’s music. In trying to create something original, I often approach composition from the mathematical angle of the Circle of Fifths.

In other words, I resort to Charles’ Father. – Steve
