Steve here. Like 'Know Harm' this is another song that began as an experiment in sampling an acoustic instrument, in this case an acoustic guitar. All the instrumentation in this piece comes from sounds made on the guitar. It was very much inspired by the band The Books and their use of cut-up samples pieced together in a very artificial way, so that the sampling itself becomes an instrument in the mix.

The title Archaeology comes from the image of "X marks the spot" in the lyrics, though beyond that I don't think it has much to do with the song. I just really like the word Archaeology - there's something hypnotic about all those vowels in a row...

The first verse is about exploring the outdoors as a child, with inspiration coming from the brilliant comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. The second verse is about exploration during adolescence, with camping trips, etc. The twelve string guitar reference is a shout-out to my cousin Aaron's twelve string - which I want to state for the record is NOT a piece of shit. But who could tune it?
