about

Nottingham is the fourth track we've released from the 2006 experimental recording sessions known as War Lore. (The others being Week 6, Week 10 and Week 21.)

As with the others, it was based on a series of acoustically-recorded samples - in this case, a series of machinery noises and sound effects which serve as the drum loop.

Acoustic guitars were pitch-shifted higher to sound like mandolins, and violins were pitch-shifted lower to sound like cellos. Joel Buxton declared the resulting sound to be Steampunk in music form.

Thematically the song explores parallels between the stories of Robin Hood and Jesus Christ (note: not their real last names). The idea arose naturally as I started writing lyrics about an oppressive ruler and a rebel who gave the masses hope. I especially liked comparing Robin Hood's robbing of the rich to feed the poor, and Christ's blessing the poor and condemnation of the rich. The song has an optimistic conclusion, I suppose, in that "the king who ruled us is dead," but in these corporate times it sometimes feels premature. - Steve

lyrics

We meet again at last
Prepare to pay
All the king’s horses and men
Will take you away

Would you rob the rich to feed the poor
There’s no future for that line of work

In my line of work I meet a lot of people
Defeated and tired, they don’t have to stand for this
You’ve got a way of making them see
Everything their world could be

The king who ruled us is dead
They all made off with his head
They all made off with his head

We meet again at last
Prepare to die
You’ve slipped away from my grasp
For the last time

Would you curse the rich and bless the poor
Let’s all wave goodbye to this tyrant

In my line of work I meet a lot of people
Defeated and tired, they don’t have to stand for this
You’ve got a way of making them see

The king who ruled us is dead
They all made off with his head
They all made off with his head
