This was a fun jam - another ground-up collaboration.
Joel provided the different riffs and we tried to write lyrics about one of our regular themes - the inequal distribution of power and wealth, but through a filter of childhood games.
It's a bit of a beast, bringing in elements of industrial music, and playing with metre. There's even a key change at the end.
We’ve been working on some fairly poppy stuff lately, so this was a chance to just cut loose with some complexity. Hope you like it. – Joel
lyrics
Ever since we were kids you always had the upper hand
You got away with murder wink
I'd put you on the defensive, make you take the stand
But simon says that's wishful thinking
I saw that stunt that you pulled, I saw you crossing the line
I saw you pulling the wool over everyone's eyes
I saw you bending the rules when you captured the flag
I saw you moving around in a game of freeze tag
Yeah I spy with my little eye
And I'm calling foul tonight
Chorus
Olly oxen free, olly olly oxen free
Olly oxen free, oxen free
You're too big to fall, and it's too close to call
Olly oxen free, olly olly oxen free
Olly oxen free, oxen free
I hide the best out of all my peers, I'm undefeated
Marco polo marco polo
Catch a tiger by the toe, bro, you can't prove that I cheated
Yolo, oh no, yolo, oh no
I saw that stunt that you pulled, I saw you crossing the line
I saw you pulling the wool over everyone's eyes
I saw you bending the rules when you captured the flag
I saw you moving around in a game of freeze tag
Yeah I spy with my little eye
And in a game of paper, scissors, rock
We will rock it like we don't know
Like we don't know how to stop
We don't know how to stop
We don't know
