Earth is one of our songs that's based on a work of popular fiction. More about that in a minute.

The seeds of this piece go back to a rhythmic idea. Sometimes a song will be inspired by a melody or a chord change, but in this case it was really just a rhythm I would tap out. You can hear this rhythm throughout the song - it's what the bass is playing (with just a single repeated note).

The idea grew gradually into a song at the Brunswick house where Apple Pi used to rehearse. I wrote the lyrics with Steve Hobbs, who also sings backup on the finished track. The 2nd half of the song came from Mike Palumbo's guitar hammerings, which inspired new chords and new directions.

As far as the lyrical content goes its origins are pretty nerdy. For those who are interested (I have to believe you're out there), it's inspired primarily by an episode from Battlestar Galactica's final season entitled Sometimes A Great Notion. Additionally, an X-Files episode called The Field Where I Died lent its title and some of its themes to the lyrics. Apocalyptic shit!

In the end, I think Earth became a song about our planet and our connection to it. Step back and watch from a distance, and you begin to see what we're doing to our world and how this relates to our lives and our mortality. Sometimes I'm not optimistic about the future of our species.
